Project Highlight - The Highline Pittsburgh
Sometimes a product installation just looks too good not to share. We recently had the opportunity to take on-site photos of our products at The Highline in Pittsburgh, PA. Not only is this property local to our Butler, PA headquarters, but the urban location also boasts a vibrant and chic exterior that is a welcomed backdrop for Keystone Ridge Designs' modern site furnishings. Here we highlight the historic property and its transformation into an iconic multi-use facility.
THE HISTORY
Formerly known as the "Pittsburgh Terminal Property" and then the "River Walk Corporate Centre," The Highline is a historic five building complex on Pittsburgh's South Side. The building was originally conceived as a central point of connection between road, river and rail transport. Designed in 1898 and completed in 1906, it was once considered the largest, most efficient cargo warehouse between New York City and Chicago. In 2013, it became listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2016, McKnight Realty Partners purchased the 868,000 square foot, 6-story brick property and converted the terminal into a creative office/retail complex dubbed "The Highline" after the High Line in New York City.
THE SPACE TODAY
With the tagline, "Live. Shop. Work Elevated.", The Highline offers a little bit of everything in a bustling area that is close to many nearby attractions. Well-furnished outdoor courtyards along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail invite office employees and visitors to work, dine, or just escape to the outdoors. An elevated green space, complete with lighting and seating, offers stunning views of the Monongahela River, the Pittsburgh skyline and even an aerial view of the outdoor park space below.
To further enhance the setting, creative murals, old rail cars, colorful street art and diverse year-round plantings add to the overall landscape with design credits by Indovina Associates Architects.
The interior spaces provide an integral parking garage, a fitness center, restaurants, a coffee shop, and state-of-the-art office and retail space that thoughtfully combine on-trend and historic elements such as exposed brick and steel beams.
"When redeveloping The Highline, we set out to create McKnight's greenest building to date - one that included eco-friendly upgrades and modern amenities, while still keeping the historical integrity of the 110-year-old riverfront property," said Izzy Rudolph, President of Development and Acquisitions, McKnight Realty Partners.
"Combining striking views of the city skyline with a one-acre public patio that directly connects to Pittsburgh's riverfront trails, The Highline was designed to be an ideal place to work and to gather with friends and colleagues. It has quickly become a hotspot for happy hours, meetings, and outdoor fitness classes, as well as larger events like weddings and annual fundraisers."
THE PRODUCTS
No outdoor public space is complete without the furnishings that encourage social gathering, keep a space clean and inviting, and offer functional places to relax in the fresh air. Tables and benches from our Creekview series provide courtyard seating while our Harmony dual litter/recycling receptacle delivers appropriate trash and sorting solutions throughout the various sections of the property.
The contemporary design of the Creekview bench along with the warmth of our proprietary wood-grain aluminum slats provide a striking balance with the surrounding Corten steel architectural elements.
The Creekview tables complement the benches while offering spacious seating for four.
The Harmony receptacle that offers separate containers for trash and recycling is installed at regular distances to ensure trash disposal is always nearby wherever you are seated.
To encourage a pet-friendly space, one receptacle is equipped with an add-on DOGI-POT to provide storage for pet waste bags.
TAKING IN THE SIGHTS
Whether taking in the city views, enjoying the artwork, moving your workspace outside, watching trains go by or greeting pedestrians on the nearby biking trail, there are always impressive sights to see at The Highline. And what better way to see them than from a comfortable outdoor seat brought to you by Keystone Ridge Designs.
