Site Furnishings in Historic Streetscapes
May marks National Historic Preservation Month, a time to reflect on the places that preserve our collective identity and give communities a unique sense of place. From historic main streets to revitalized town squares, these spaces serve as both cultural landmarks and everyday gathering spots. At Keystone Ridge Designs, we’re honored to play a role in enhancing these environments through site furnishings that balance historic charm with modern functionality.
Honoring the Past Through Design
Historic preservation is about more than saving buildings, it’s about creating environments where history and modern life coexist. Site furnishings like benches, litter receptacles, tables, and bike racks are essential in shaping these public spaces. But in preservation districts, design details matter. That’s why our products are available with a wide range of customizations, from powder coat colors that reflect heritage palettes to laser-cut logos and ornamental castings that echo local architecture.
One of the best ways to showcase how we do this is by example. Here are few favorite revitalization spotlights.
Streetscape Spotlight: Zelienople, PA
With a history that dates back to the early 1800s, Zelienople, PA describes itself as “a modern place with old-fashioned grace.” We’ve had the privilege of being part of their story by supplying site furnishings for over 20 years. With a streetscape focused on walkability, community involvement, and small-town character, a trip through “Zelie” will quickly make you feel at home. Our traditional Lamplighter bench styles, durable Midtown receptacles, and color-matched finishes were chosen to complement Zelienople’s historic architecture and maintain visual harmony throughout the community. Many of the benches also feature engraved plaques—an opportunity for community donors and local sponsors to support the town.
Streetscape Spotlight – Terre Haute, IN
Maybe your town has a unique claim to fame that you want to honor and bring attention to. That is the case for downtown Terre Haute, IN. As the birthplace of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle, the city wanted to celebrate its unique past in a meaningful way. A custom logo on our Lamplighter bench brings a piece of that history into the public space—combining everyday function with local pride.
Streetscape Spotlight: Grove City, PA
Grove City, PA is another local town that has embraced the fusion of functionality and community identity through site furnishings. With a nearby college campus, its main street offers a mix of small businesses, dining, and culture. Pullman benches and Reading litter receptacles are placed throughout the streetscape, but the standout features are the custom Sonance bike racks. These racks not only provide secure parking for cyclists but also celebrate local landmarks and community pride through unique logos and custom designs. By incorporating graphic symbols, Olde Town Grove City creates a streetscape that’s both practical and distinctly its own.
Revitalization Project Spotlight: Fullerton, CA
A new favorite revitalization project is quickly taking shape in Fullerton, CA, where we’ve partnered with the city to help restore and preserve its historic transit center. Custom Pullenium benches and Sonance bike racks were designed to reflect the original train station’s character while reinforcing the city’s brand identity with laser-cut logos. We also manufactured custom signage featuring the same logo on a weathered steel backdrop to enhance the vintage appeal and tie the furnishings together. We are excited to see this project come together and continue to support the Downtown Fullerton revitalization efforts.
Customization for Community Identity
We could go on and on about the memorable city streetscape and downtown revitalization projects that we’ve been a part of. Every historic district has its own story, and every streetscape project has unique challenges. Whether it’s matching century-old ironwork details or mounting on uneven brick and stone surfaces, our team specializes in made-to-order solutions that respect both aesthetic and structural requirements. Custom insets, engraved plaques, and community-specific logos are just a few of the ways we help municipalities bring their vision to life.
Built to Last—Like the Stories They Support
Our durable powder-coated steel construction ensures that the beauty and function of these furnishings endure through the seasons and years. Investing in high-quality, American-made site furniture not only enhances the user experience but also aligns with the long-term goals of historic preservation: longevity, stewardship, and civic pride.
